Christmas Craft Workshops in Essex: A Creative Day of Mosaics & Linocut

Looking for a Christmas craft workshop in Essex that feels a little more special than another afternoon of Christmas shopping?

This December, my friend - Nicola Upton aka Mrs Mosaic - and I are joining creative forces for a festive day of making at The Fold, Billericay, on Sunday 8th November, with two Christmas-themed creative workshops to choose from.

In the morning, Nicola will be running a Christmas mosaic star workshop, where you'll create your own festive mosaic that can be displayed indoors or outdoors (once it's been grouted, of course!) Then, in the afternoon, I'll be running my beginner-friendly linocut Christmas card workshop, where you'll design, carve and print your own set of handmade Christmas cards.

The workshops are booked separately so you can choose the one that appeals to you. Or, if you're feeling particularly enthusiastic (or simply can't choose), book both and make a whole creative day of it!

A creative Christmas day in Essex

Christmas can be a lovely time of year but it can also become a bit of an overwhelming whirlwind of frantic shopping, panicked organising, eating far too much and then, in your stuffed exhausted stupor, trying to remember where you put the Sellotape so you can wrap that last-minute present you forgot about.

So we're offering something a little different: a chance to spend a few mindful, screen-free hours learning a fun new creative skill that lets you slow down and make something with your hands.

You might be looking specifically for a Christmas craft workshop in Essex or a creative day out with a friend, or maybe you just stumbled across my post and now fancy something a little different to do in the run-up to Christmas. Well, these workshops are your chance to make something rather than buy something. It might be a little wonky but it was made with your own hands - with effort, love and care - and that's the gorgeous charm of it.

So join Nicola and I for a glorious day of crafting. And you'll have something lovely and handmade and utterly unique to take home at the end of it, too.

Morning: Christmas Mosaic Workshop, 10.30 - 12.30

The day begins with a festive mosaic workshop with Mrs Mosaic (Nicola) making a large mosaic star centrepiece that will brighten up any location whether indoors or out.

You will spend time designing and exploring the range of tile colours, shapes and textures laying out your unique design. You will then transfer your design by glueing the pieces onto the mosaic base.

Each participant is supplied with a 'goody' bag with chosen grout colour, mixing tools and full instructions to complete the weatherproofing part of the process (this cannot be done until 24hrs after the glue has 'cured' (dried)

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners and is great fun to do with a friend.

The mosaic workshop is booked separately from the linocut workshop.

Afternoon: Linocut Christmas Card Workshop, 1.30 - 3.30

In the afternoon, it's my turn!

I'll be running a linocut Christmas card workshop, where you'll learn how to design, carve and hand-print your own Christmas cards.

Never tried linocut before? Don't worry. The workshop is designed for complete beginners and I'll guide you through the whole process from choosing your design to making your prints. Plus, I always come with templates in case you get stuck!

You'll learn how to safely carve a lino block, ink it up and print it by hand. Once you've created your design, you can print it multiple times to make a set of handmade Christmas cards to send to friends and family.

You'll also get to take your carved lino block home, so you can continue experimenting with linocut after the workshop.

No previous printmaking experience is needed, and you definitely don't need to be brilliant at drawing. Simple, bold designs work beautifully for linocut, and (as said above) I'll have templates and ideas available if you need a little creative inspiration.

If you're struggling to choose between the two workshops, you don't necessarily have to! You can book the Christmas mosaic workshop in the morning and the linocut Christmas card workshop in the afternoon, creating a whole day of festive making.

You'll get to try two completely different creative processes, meet other people who enjoy making things and come home with two handmade projects.

And, importantly, you don't have to book both. The workshops are available to book separately so you can simply choose the one that sounds most like your cup of tea (or glass of mulled wine - I'm not judging!)
