There's something magical about making a print by hand. The moment you peel back the lino block and see your design transferred cleanly onto paper gives you a small rush of satisfaction that never gets old, even if it’s your thousandth time (and it will be, if you get hooked!)
If you've ever been curious about linocut printing, here are five reasons why booking a workshop with me in Essex might just be the best decision you make this season.
1. You Don't Need Any Experience. Seriously.
One of the most common things I hear before a workshop starts is "I'm not very artistic." And one of the most common things I hear at the end is "I can't believe how good this is!"
Linocut printmaking is genuinely accessible to everyone. You don't need to be able to draw, you don't need any craft experience and you certainly don't need to consider yourself "creative" in any sense. The tools and techniques are easy to pick up, plus I'll guide you through every step, from transferring your design onto the lino block, to carving, inking and pulling your final prints.
What you do need is a willingness to give it a go. Everything else follows.
2. It's a Digital Detox
Be honest, when did you last spend a few hours completely absorbed in something with your hands, with your phone face-down and your to-do list forgotten?
Printmaking has a wonderfully meditative quality. Carving lino requires focus and it naturally quietens the noise and many people find that deeply relaxing. There’s always a lovely moment in every workshop where the room goes calmly quiet as everyone gets into the relaxing rhythm of carving. You're present, engaged and creating something tangible. By the time you're pulling your final prints, a few hours will have passed and you'll feel genuinely refreshed. This is creative wellbeing.
In a busy county as chaotic and connected as Essex (whether you're in Southend, Chelmsford or anywhere in between) carving out that kind of screen-free space for yourself can feel like a luxury. It really shouldn't be.
3. You Go Home With Something You're Proud Of
Unlike many experiences that leave you with nothing but a memory (and a few questionable phone photos…), a printmaking workshop ends with you holding a set of original, handmade prints made entirely by you.
These aren't craft-kit prints or pre-made designs. They're genuinely yours: your design, your carving, your choices. Many of my students frame their prints or use them as cards or give them as gifts. A few have gone on to develop a lasting practice of their own and have even been exhibited!
4. It Makes a Thoughtful Gift
If you're looking for a birthday present, an anniversary gift or something a little different for that tricky friend who seemingly has everything, then a printmaking workshop gift voucher is a thoughtful option.
It's an experience rather than a thing that might end up in the charity shop next Christmas (we've all experienced that, right?!). It's time set aside to do something creative, learn a new skill and make something beautiful. A gift people actually remember.
My workshop gift vouchers are available year-round and are popular choices for Christmas, Mother's Day and birthdays. They're also a brilliant option for two friends to book and attend together which often happens. I’ve even had a pair of friends from opposite ends of the country who chose my linocut workshop as their annual meet-up place! Such an honour!
5. The Setting Makes All the Difference
My workshops take place in different venues across Essex but I always provide a warm, welcoming creative space to help people escape their everyday. Classes are deliberately kept small so you get genuine personal attention rather than being one face in a crowd.
One of my main venues is in Hadleigh, Essex, which is easily accessible from across South Essex, especially if you're travelling from Southend-on-Sea, Rayleigh, Benfleet, or further afield from Chelmsford. There are plenty of good spots nearby for lunch or a coffee before or after your session. And if you need some fresh air and inspiration before or after your session, Hadleigh Country Park and Hadleigh Castle are just minutes away, with stunning views across the estuary that moved the painter John Constable himself. So you'd be following in prestigious footsteps.
Ready to Give It a Try?
There's a workshop here for you. I run beginner linocut sessions, multi-colour printing workshops, Christmas card workshops, fabric block printing sessions, botanical monoprinting… all with materials included and no experience required. And I always bring the biscuits!
Browse upcoming workshop dates and book your place, or pick up a gift voucher if you'd like to treat someone special. I'd love to see you!
